Kitten Care & Resources

Bringing your new kitten home

Bringing home a new kitten is such an exciting milestone, and a little preparation goes a long way. To help your Maine Coon kitten transition smoothly into your home, we recommend setting up a quiet, safe space where they can explore at their own pace. This could be a guest room, bathroom, or enclosed area with all the essentials: litter box, food and water dishes, cozy bedding, and a few toys.

Give your kitten time to adjust. Most will begin exploring within a day or two. Make introductions to other pets slowly and under supervision, and always allow your kitten to come to you when they’re ready.

Tips for a Successful First Day:

  • Have a travel carrier ready for pickup day

  • Keep the home environment calm and quiet

  • Show your kitten where the litter box and food area are

  • Avoid visitors for the first few days to reduce stress

  • Use gentle petting and quiet voices to build trust

Within a week, most kittens feel right at home and will be running the house in no time!

Feeding your maine coon kitten

What to Feed

Feeding your Maine Coon kitten the right diet from the start is essential for healthy growth and development. Kittens have different nutritional needs than adult cats, so it's important to use food specifically formulated for kittens, even if you have other adult cats at home.

At Gold Dust Maine Coons, we recommend two trusted kitten foods:

🔹 Purina ONE Healthy Kitten Formula (Click HERE)

🔹 Royal Canin Maine Coon Kitten Dry Food (Click HERE)

When you take your kitten home, we provide a starter pack that includes a can of Friskies wet food and a bag of dry food. If you choose to transition your kitten to a new food, we recommend doing so gradually over several days using the provided baggie to avoid upsetting their sensitive stomachs.

Feeding Schedule

We typically free feed our kittens, allowing them to eat small amounts throughout the day. However, if you prefer a feeding schedule to monitor portions, here’s a guideline for kittens aged 2–4 months:

  • Feed 4 meals per day

  • Offer 1/4 to 1/3 cup per meal depending on the kitten’s appetite and weight.

  • Always have clean water accessible.
